The above photo shows Roy at Torkington Park, Torkington, Hazel Grove, Cheshire, England. Actually, there is no evidence that our Torkingtons came from Torkington. However, there is plenty of evidence that they came from Offerton, which is only a couple of miles from Torkington, so it is likely that they once lived in Torkington and used that place as a family name. It is probably a mistake to confuse our Torkingtons with the de Torkingtons, who took the name because they held the estate of Torkington. The earliest Torkington ancestor that we have been able to identify for certain is William, born around 1789 in Offerton. He was an illiterate silk weaver and unlikely to have been a member of the gentry or the aristocracy. In May and June of 2002, Roy spent three weeks in England and Wales, visiting friends, doing genealogical research, and meeting recently-discovered fourth cousins. This narrative describes that trip. |

Roy and Cousin Barbara at Torkington Road in Torkington. Nowadays Torkington is in Hazel Grove, which is in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, which in turn is in Greater Manchester. However, historically, Torkington, Offerton, and Stockport were all in Cheshire. |
