The ShakeCo Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: Is this a “real” Company?  A: Depends.  There is a group of people who make up the “Company.”  They’re listed here.  We are not incorporated, so we’re not that kind of company.  The “Company” basically consists of all the actors I’ve used in the past who choose to be listed as a member of the Company.  They are the talent pool from which I cast my shows.
  • Q: Who belongs to the Company?  A: As above, look here.
  • Q: How can I join the Company?  A: Check the audition page for details.
  • Q: Do you pay your actors/staff?   A: Well, (heh), let me (hah) put it this (hah ha ha) way. (Bwah ha ha ha ha Hoo ha!  Ahem.)  No.
  • Q:  I donated at a show (or sent a donation).  Can I take a tax deduction?   A:  No.  We are not currently a non-profit or not-for-profit organization.  All income for The Shakespeare Company of Greater Rochester and ShakeCo.com is income for me, Philip Frey, the Company’s Founder and Artistic Director.  Of course, all expenses are my expenses as well.  (Not that the income has ever equaled the expenses, but that’s for another time.)  I specifically do not encourage direct donations.  If you want to help the program, come to a show and donate there.  I do have some merchandise available at CafePress, but there is no profit on it, I sell those at cost.  In the future I hope to have merchandise that can be both less expensive and result in a profit for me.  At that time, buying merchandise will be a great help.
  • Q: Isn’t there already a Shakespeare group in Rochester? Do we need another one?  A: The group you’re thinking of is the Shakespeare Players, a program of the Rochester Community Players.  I did, in fact, work with them for many years. (Just check my resume to see how much.)  Although many members of the Company have also worked with the Shakespeare Players, we are different groups.  And OF COURSE we need another one.  Can’t have too many.
  • Q: What is your highest level Pokémon?  A: I have a level 76 Pikachu.
  • Q: Do you take anything seriously?  A: Yes.  I take the art of stagecraft seriously.  Although this web site is dominated by the more fun side of the Shakespeare Company of Greater Rochester and is characterized by my somewhat offbeat sense of humor, my dedication to THE WORK is nothing but serious.  I have found throughout my years of working in community theater that far too many groups take themselves far too seriously.  I can’t.  I know that we are just a bunch of people playing pretend in order to entertain a bunch of other people.  If this attitude bothers you, or causes you to think less of the Shakespeare Company of Greater Rochester, then I’m truly sorry.  It’s your loss.
