Mouse's Tale (to Alice) | ネズミの物語

(English) The mouse's tale poem in Alice in Wonderland, Ch. 3, is a form of "emblematic or figured verse" whose typeset depicts a figure (in this case, a mouse's tail). Many e-texts do arrange the text, but many do not make the typeset progressively smaller for a true "tapering down" effect, or use the < font size> tag which does a rather poor job. In this html realization, I have used the cascading style-sheet feature (I still used the <PRE> tag ).The left column is a .gif image for reference.

(Japanese) 『不思議の国のアリス』第３章のネズミの物語(身の上話)の詩は、象徴図形〔^{エンブレム}〕詩または図形詩などと呼ばれる詩の一例で、活字でもってなにかの形態を表している(ここではネズミのしっぽ）。多くの電子テキストは、なるほど、尻尾の形態はしているが、活字をだんだん小さくして、尖端にむけてしぼませるようにするところが おろそかだったり、< font size> タグを使っていて、あまり見栄えがよくなかったりする。ここでは、 スタイルシートの記述をちょっと使ってもうすこしましな.html化を試みてみた(<PRE> タグは使っている)。 左欄は、.gif 画像なので参照されたし。

  As far as I'm concerned, you can cannibilize this HTML whatever way you want, and tinker with the layout, replace the text with your favorite translation, etc.
  Re: the Japanese text. I think the name of the cyber-hound in Yukito Kishiro's comics Gunnm (Battle Angel Alita) is taken from this poem.
  I just provide a plain vanilla Japanese translation of my own (i.e., I didn't get too creative / take too much license). I thought of using Hiroo Yamagata's on-line translation that 's availble, but I said "N-ngh" (<- WRONG ANSWER buzzard sound here) because that translation zapped "Fury" just writes inu or "dog". There have been a dozen or more Alice translations in print at one time or another in Japan.

  ここに掲載した邦訳は、私が暫時的に約したものである。語調を良くするためだからとか言って、言い回しをまるで変えたり、そういう飛躍的な改ざんはしていないつまりだ。気に入らなかったら、お好みの訳で差し換えればいい。   山形浩生のオンライン訳で間に合わせようと思ったのだが、「Fury」という犬の名を単に「犬」に訳しているから、使用しないことにした。
  木城ゆきとの『銃夢(ガンム)』に登場する「フュリー」というサイボーグ犬の名はここからとられたのではないかと思う。英語でもGunnm というタイトルで、出てるようだが、ガリィ→戦闘天使アリータと変えられているらしい<しくしく>。
