Frederic Ogden Nash, b. Aug 19, 1902 in Rye, NY. Briefly educated at Harvard (1920-1). Known generally for his humorous light verse. Was on the staff on The New Yorker magazine. In 1943 he collaborated with composer Kurt Weill on the musical "One Touch of Venus"

    The following is Nash's nonsense poem, supplied with footnotes where I speculate on its meaning.

    Geddondillo1

    The sharrot2 scudders3 nights in the quastron4 now,
    The dorlim5 slinks undeceded6 in the grost7,
    Appetency8 lights the corb9 of the guzzard10 now,
    The ancient beveldric is otley lost.

    Treduty13 flees like a darbit14 along the drace15 now,
    Collody lollops16 belutedly17 over the slawn18.
    The bloodbound bitterlitch19 bays the ostrous20 moon now,
    For yesterday's bayable majicity21 is flunky22 gone.

    Make way, make way, the preluge23 is scarly24 nonce now,
    Make way, I say, the gronderous25 Demiburge26 comes,
    His blidless27 veins shall ye joicily28 rejugulate29 now,
    And gollify30 him from 'twixt his protecherous31 gums.

    1gedondillo. Composite noun made up of "armadillo" and "armageddon".
    2sharrot. A flying creature presumably consisting of part shark, par parrot.
    3scudders.Flight motion combining both the "scud" and "flutter" at once, perhaps.
    4As to what or where quastron might be, I can only speculate. The "quasillum" in Latin is a small basket, while "alabastron" is a small Greek vase or ampule often made of alabaster. Combining the two may suggest a "small bird-cage" of some kind.
    5dorlim. Its "slinking" behavior makes it likely it is part dormouse, a hibernating rodent in-between a mouse and a squirrel. Perhaps though the creature appear near the "doorsill" or "doorjambs" of human domiciles. (Although the true etymology is not "door" but rather French dormir meaning 'to sleep', alluding to its hibernating behavior.)
    6undeceded. This verb has the same Latin root -cedare as "recede" and "proceed", hence must be a motion of some kind. The OED lists "decede" as an obsolete verb meaning "go away, depart, remove"
    7grost. A contraction for "ground-post" is my guess.
    8appetency. In comparison with "competency", deriving from "compete", which is formed from the Latin com with + petere to seek, "appetency" might be construed to mean, "lack of effort or zeal". Or, it may just be a malapropism for "appetite".
    9corb. A "corneous" (horny) knob.
    10guzzard. Probably a sub-type of the buzzard, with a prominently featured gizzard.
    11beveldric. "bevel" is "angled", and a "baldric" is a type of belt or strap that's slung diagonally crosswise across the shoulders, meant for carrying a sword, bugle, etc.
    12Otley is an English town and birthplace of cabinet maker Thomas Chippendale. The suffix "-ley" is frequently used in place names, and is a variant spelling of "lea", meaning 'grassland, meadow'. Usage of "otley" here as an adverb perhaps means 'at ley (at ley)'; cp. "men lost at sea" or "far asea".
    13Treduty. Unknown. Since it occurs here as singular noun without an article, I'll treat is as a proper noun. Likewise for Collody below.
    14darbit. A combination "derby" (pronounced "darby") by the English, and "rabbit". This may well be the decoy rabit used in grayhound races.
    15drace. Pehaps "drapes" made from "lace".
    16lollop means either 1. lounge about or 2. move in a clumsy or relaxed way. (New Webster's dictionary)
    17belutedly. A take on "belatedly", while "lute" is a medieval string instrument.
    18slawn. Perhaps a "slick lawn" or "slated lawn".
    19bitterlitch. adverb. "bitterly and in a bitching(griping) sort of way."
    20ostrous. may be amenable to several interpretations, but I adopt "oysterlike", from Latin ostrea 'oyster'.
    21majicity. "majesty" like that of a "magic city" ?
    22is flunky gone. One can interpret this as an antiquated (present perfect) form of "has gone flunky," perhaps meaning has turned into a failure.
    23preluge. Perhaps a disaster predating the "deluge".
    24scarly. Perhaps a portmanteau word consisting of "scarcely" and "nary".
    25gronderous. "great" and "ponderous".
    26Demiburge This appears to be a monstrous being of some kind. A "demogorgon" is the name of a terrible infernal being. Or it may be a veiled coinage for "demi bourgeoisie", that is to say, those segments of society who consider themselves above the "petty bourgeoisie", thus subject to satire.
    27blitless. both "bloodless" and "blitheless"
    28joicily. demonstrative of "icy" "joy".
    29rejugulate. "re-" + "jugular" + "circulate"
    30gollify. both "gall" and "mollify" at once.
    31protecherous. "protruding" and "lecherous"?

    1 gedondillo. "armadillo" 「アルマジロ」 と"armageddon" 「ハルマゲドン」からなる合成語。
    2 sharrot. 鮫(シャーク)と鸚鵡(パロット)をかけ合わせた、飛行性の動物か。和名コウム、またはサメオウムドリ？
    3 scudder. "scud" 「すうっと飛ぶ」 と "flutter"「羽ばたく」動作を兼ねたような、空飛ぶしぐさであろうか。
    4 quastron. これは、ほとんどあてずっぽうだが、ラテン語で "quasillum" は「小さな籠」で、"alabastron"「アラバストロン」は ギリシャ容器の一種で、アラバスターでできた香油瓶であることから、「小さな鳥かご」が連想できる。
    5 "dorlim" 「こそこそする」習性をもつことからして、おそらくは"dormouse" 〔ヤマネ：リスとネズミとの中間の動物。冬眠性のげっ歯類〕に近い小動物であろう。 人家の"doorsill"「敷居」や"doorjamb"「戸口のわき柱」に出没するのかもしれない。 (本当の語源は、"door-"ではなく"dormir"フランス語で「眠る」である。つまり冬眠性に言及。)
    6"undeceded" これは、 "recede" や "proceed" と同様に、ラテン語の語根 -cedare [羅] をもつ、移動をしめす動詞だる。オクスフォード英辞典では、"decede"は、「いなくなる、去る、離れる」等の意味の古語として 載っている。
    7grost. これは、"ground-post"「地に埋め込んだ丸柱」の短縮形か。
    8appetency. これに近い形態の "competency" 「有能さ」の元になるのは、 "compete"で、 その語源はラテン語の com 「~と」 + petere 「求める」である。そこから推論するなら、 "appetency" は、さしずめ、 「探究心/努力/熱意の欠けたありさま」となろう。 あるいは、"appetite"「食欲」の誤用かもしれない。
    9guzzard. " buzzard"(ハゲタカなど腐食性の猛禽類)の一種で、おそらく"gizzard"(砂肝)が、 特に際立っているのだろう。鳥類の砂肝は、名どおり砂利〔じゃり〕が入っているので、「じゃげたか」と訳した。
    10corb. "corneous" 角質の"knob" 瘤〔こぶ〕であろう。 "corn"は、足にできる、 角質の隆起（足のたこ）もさすので、「たここぶ」とした。
    11beveldric. "bevel" は、「斜め」、 "baldric" は、「綬帯、飾帯」などといって、 肩から斜めにたすき掛けにかけ、剣やラッパを吊る革帯。
    12otley. 英国の町 Otley は、家具師チッペンデールの生まれ故郷。 "-ley"は、地名のとしてもよく使われる接尾語で、「草原，牧草地」を意味する。"ley"は"lea"の変形つづりである。 ここで用いられる"otley"は、あるいは"at lea"つまり「牧草地にて」という意味なのか。
    13Treduty. 不明。単数形だが、"the", "a"など冠詞がついていないので、 固有名詞とみなすことにする。次行の Collody コロディーも同。
    14darbit. "derby"(英国では"darby"と発音する)「ダービー競馬」 と"rabbit"「兎」。あるいは、グレイハウンド競争に使うデコイの兎のことかもしれない。
    15drace. レース編みの"drapes"(カーテン)か。
    16belutedly. これは"belatedly"「遅まきながら」のもじり 。"lute"「リュート」は、 中世の弦楽器。 ここでは、「ウクレレ」＋「遅ればせながら」で駄洒落を通した。
    17slawn. これは"slick lawn"「つるつるした芝生」もしくは "slated lawn"「粘板岩の敷石をした芝」か。
    18lollop. 1. 寝そべったり、のらくらする、2. よたよた歩く。
    19bitterlitch. "bitterly"「苦々しい」、かつ、"bitch"「ぶうぶう不平をいう」ようなありさま。
    20ostrous. いくつか解釈はあろうが、ここでは、ラテン語 ostrea に由来する「牡蠣のような」 とした。
    21majicity. まるで"magic"("magic city") のような"majesty"(威厳、荘重、壮麗、)。 ここでは「妖艶」と「威厳」をあわせた合成語を使った。
    22is flunky gone. これは、現在完了形"has gone flunky"の古形と とることもできる。「へなちょこになってしまった」あたりの意味か。
    23preluge. "The Deluge" 「大洪水」以前の大災害か？ここでは、 [水」を「氷」に変えてひねった。
    24scarly. "scarcely" と "nary"の混成語か。（いずれも「少しも...ない」の意味）。 訳では「ちっとも」と「ほぼ（まるで）」を合わせた。
    25gronderous. "great"「大なる」 と "ponderous"「非常に重い」の混合語。 ここでは「巨大」をひねって「巨太」とした。
    26Demiburge どうやら恐ろしい怪物のようである。"demogorgon" 「デモゴルゴン」は、 地獄の大悪魔。 あるいは "demi bourgeoisie" つまり「デミ・ブル」＝「半市民」という意味合いでの造語かもしれない。 すなわち、「プチ・ブル」＝「小市民」よりも、自分らは上流だと思い込んでいる人々を風刺したもの？
    27blitless. "bloodless"「血のない(冷血な)」 、かつ、 "blitheless" 「陽気さのない」。
    28joicily. "joy"「嬉しそう」にして、それが "icy" 「氷のようにつめたい」。
    29rejugulate. "re-"「再」 + "jugular"「頚動脈」 + "circulate"「循環」
    30protecherous. "protruding"「突出して」おり、"lecherous"「淫乱な」？
    31gollify. "gall"「いらだたせ」 また "mollify" 「なだめる」ことを同時におこなうこと。 ここでは「逆撫でする」と「なだめる」をあわせた。

    Storyline:
    Synopses can be found at The Guide to Musical Theater and KWF.
    Art collector Whitelaw Savory has acquired a 3,000 year old prized Venus statue (it bears a resemblance to his lost love), which is getting mounted in his museum. Savory's barber Rodney Hatch comes along, and by happenstance slips his finaceée's engagement ring on the statue. A flash of light, and Venus comes back to life. The goddess falls in love with Rodney, and relentlessly pursues the engaged man, but he spurns her advances. Below is the song that the love goddess Venus sings, bemusing on how the world has changed in her millenial hiatus, wondering if she's "lost her touch," etc.

    ストーリーライン：
    美術コレクターのホワイトロー・セイヴァリーは、(思い出の彼女にそっくりな) 3,000 年前のヴィーナス像を手に入れる。ホワイトローの床屋のロドニー･ハッチは、何気ない思いつきからフィアンセの婚約指輪をこのヴィーナス像の指にはめてみる。すると像は光をはなち、愛の女神ヴィーナスがここ現代に蘇る。女神は、自分をこの眠りから解き放ってくれたロドニーに一目惚れ。容赦なく彼を追いかけるが、ロドニーは拒み続ける。 以下は、数千年のブランクから下界に戻ったヴィーナスが、世界はどうかわってしまったのか、自分の愛の女神としての手腕はさびれてしまったのか、などと思案する歌である。ロドニーは、許婚のグロリアからは指輪はどこにやったのかと責められるし、ヴィーナス像が歩いていなくなってしまったホワイトローは、てっきりロドニーが窃盗したものと思い込み、ドタバタ劇となる。

    Nash summed up popular opinion in the West
    [of Japanese immigration] with the following verse,
    which appeared in Life magazine in 1932:

    Stratas Sings Weill
    Canadian-born Teresa Stratas was supposedly handed the mantle of the interpretess of Weill songs by Lotte Lenya (widow of Weill) herself. I do not hesitate to praise this work in the highest terms. Ute Lemper sounds trite in comparison, though the dictates of mainstream tastes may be otherwise.

    ワイルの未亡人ロッテ・レーニャから、ワイルの歌い手の衣鉢をつがされたというストラータス(カナダ生まれ)。 個性あり、彩があるこのアーティスト。私なら躊躇せずにこちらを絶賛したい。比べてウーテ・レンパーは断然ヌルいと思うのだが、 メインストリームの好みは、どうもこの限りでないようだ。
