Students will have the opportunity to review previous word processing skills
Students will be comfortable and adept at using word processing for reports and assignments

Students will be able to connect the information on exploration and use a creative format with clip art and text boxes from "Kidspiration"
Recognizing the versatility of computer software in classroom activities
 

Students will log onto their individual network accounts, then MS Word
They will format a new document and then type a short reflection on the begining of the school year

Students will create a cover sheet, highlighting their ideas about exploration and explorers
Students will need to be comfortable with the "Kidspiration" software and be able to manipulate the clip art, free drawing tool, and type sentences in the text boxes

Exploration/Astronomy 
(Week 4, 4 Weeks)
Students used the Internet for research on Astronomy
They logged onto the Internet, navigated a specific site from the American Museum of Natural History, and answered questions from a prepared worksheet
 

Students become adept at logging onto the school network, the Internet, and navigating the web
They learn how to type URLs into an address bar on the Internet
Using the Internet to collect information for research topics and collect additional information on the current unit of inquiry.

Nov: Astronomy 
(Week 8, 5 Weeks)
Students used the Internet for research on their Astronomy topics
They logged onto the Internet, navigated to a specific web site and answered questions from a prepared worksheet

They learn how to type URLs into a address bar on the Internet and "ignore" pop-ups
Using the Internet to collect information for research topics

Dec: Astronomy  (Week 13, 3 Weeks) Students used rough drafts (prepared in the classroom) and typed them into a MS Word document. These reports were in the format of newspaper articles written as historical documents describing discoveries and inventions related to Astronomy
 

Recognize the importance of being adept at word processing, typing, mouse skills and creating original documents



 

Students type reports using their rough drafts and knowledge of word processing

Continue word processing skills using MS Word
Students used a teacher generated worksheet that created an acrostic poem spelling out "Money"
Each letter required a different font, size, and style

Students also typed a reflection of their field trip to the Mashantucket Pequot Museum in Connecticut


 

Recognize the importance of being adept at word processing, typing, mouse skills and creating original documents
To improve students' typing skills and and comfort with touch typing
Students will be able to log onto their individual accounts, MS Word, format an original document and type it

Feb: Communication 
(Week 20, 4 Weeks)
Students were introduced to research tools on the Internet

They logged onto the school network with their individual passwords, logged onto the Internet and typed a pre-selected URL into the address bar
This Internet site was the home page of Information Please, a web site that offers basic research tools: dictionary, encyclopedias, almanacs, atlases, etc.
Students used a teacher generated worksheet with a variety of questions requiring these resources to answer questions
 

To show students the variety of resources available on the Inernet
To show students that different types of information require different research tools
To be able to enter a specific web address successfully and then navigate the web site in order to answer questions
 

Students will complete the worksheets with correct answers

Students will create their own Communication drawings using 'Kidspiration" software, including the free drawing tool, clip art, and text boxes to explain and describe what they have created

 

Students will be able to connect information on Communication with a creative format using clip art, the free drawing tool, and text boxes from "Kidspiration"
Recognizing the versatility of computer software in classroom activities
 

Students will create Communication "picture" with "Kidspiration" software
Students need to be comfortable with the software and be able to transfer the information they have collected about Communication into an interesting picture
