Students will begin to make the connection between letters on the keyboard, spelling, typing and reading
 

Students will receive "worksheets" with a word bank that they will complete.
The reading of the worksheets will help assess their reading levels; the selection of words in the word bank will indicate their knowledge of keyboarding
Finishing the sentences, with word bank words will indicate their level of competence in keyboarding

Oct: Parks 
(Week 4, 4 Weeks)
Students will use the software "Kidspiration" to design their own parks out of clip art. They can be real or imaginary.
Introduction to using text boxes and clip art on the computer

Continue to reinforce typing and mouse skills
Introduction to touch typing using "Read, Write & Type" software
 

Students will become aware that pictures and text can explain their ideas and work and that the computer offers them both formats, either separately or together
Creating computer pictures requires selecting appropriate clip art (arranged by subject), filling text boxes with sentences, and completing their pictures to show their own ideas of how body systems relate in the human body
Practice typing/writing skills

Using "Read, Write & Type" software helps students recognize the layout of the keyboard and become more familiar with the sounds of letters and how to read and spell
 

Students will create their own stories and ideas using "Kidspiration" software
Finished pictures will show their ability to write phrases and sentences to describe their pictures
Placing pictures on the page will show that they can connect pictures and ideas

Students progress through the "Read, Write & Type" lessons. In addition, to keyboard practice, the software reinforces letter sounds and reading

Human Body 
(Week 8, 5 Weeks)
Continue to reinforce typing and mouse skills
Students will use worksheets in MS Word to answer questions related to their unit: The Human Body

Students will use the software "Kidspiration" to describe what they would see, hear, taste, feel, and smell on a tropical island or in the city.
This was another opportunity to use clip art and text boxes
 

Keyboarding and word processing need to be practiced, in a fun and instructive manner, so that students will become adept at keyboarding and find the computer as easy to use as paper and pencil

Students will become aware that pictures and text can explain their ideas and work and that the computer offers them both formats, either separately or together.
Creating computer pictures requires selecting appropriate clip art (arranged by subject), filling text boxes with sentences, and completing their pictures to show their own ideas of the five senses.

Practice typing/writing skills
 

Students will receive worksheets with a questions and boxes for answers relating to the Human Body
The reading of the worksheets will help assess their reading levels
Answering these questions will indicate their level of competence in keyboarding

Students will create their own "stories and ideas using "Kidspiration" software.

Students complete a teacher generated worksheet, in MS Word, that included sentences related to their new unit of inquiry and included a word bank to assist them with spelling
Students use a classroom created (with teacher generated materials)"Kidspiration" project that includes different kinds of transportation and text boxes with information on each type of transportaton. They transfer their informaton from the classroom rough draft, add clip art and edit their work on the computer
 

Proper use of the keyboard and mouse for word processing
Introduction to independent reading and writig with the keyboard to improve word processing skills
Completing sentences requires good mouse skills for placement of words; students must use scroll bar to return to word bank; students are able to show understanding of "transportation"
"Kidspiration" allows students to be creative with their work; type information from a rough draft; add clip art

Students use a classroom created (with teacher generated materials) "Kidspiration" project that includes different kinds of transportation and text boxes with information on each type of transportaton. They transfer their informaton from the classroom rough draft, add clip art and edit their work on the computer

 

"Kidspiration" allows students to be creative with their work; type information from a rough draft; add clip art

 

The completion of the "Kidspiration" project can assist teachers in determining how well students can use the software, keyboard and use the mouse, add clip art, edit, and finalize a project
