Here are some excerpts from “Love in the Stacks” © 2001 Gary L. Thomas

GV1189.5

I chose a branch as true as my intent,
measured it off according to the time,
divided it, and then used threads of rhyme
to fasten pointed flow'rs of lilac scent.
I next tied on (to keep their journeys straight)
a nightingale's lost feather, fallen where
her warbling songs of passion filled the air
whenever she was longing for her mate.
And thus apprenticed to the fletcher's call
I practiced at my craft both day and night.
Impatient, my soul ready to take flight,
I've fashioned these sharp shafts, fourteen in all.
To gain her love, I ape your ancient art,
so teach me, Cupid, how to hit her heart.
