Search for Weissinger

The First thing you want to do is to discover if we have the first name. What I've done is to list ALL first names in my family lines, with links to that person's Family Group Sheet (FGS) so you can decide if it's the Right One. If there is no link, and/or for someone in the 20th century , please write me.

In order to search by first name, select --?-- Weissinger in 18c GER SC GA; 19c AL BRAZIL MS KY

There are also some Weissinger searchers who are NOT one of ours, so far as we are able to tell.
and some "allied line" searchers - Cribbs, Hutto, Wilson (Eliza Mary BOND who m L.A.Weissinger)etc.
But you may want to contact them?

Weissinger - a short review
The first known in America was George Weissinger (1769-1837) who, with probable brothers John and Leonhardt came to Charleston SC in the 1780's. Through a rather convulted process we have found that he was the son of Leonhardt Weissinger and Agnes Dorothea Scheifele, of Wurtenburg Germany.

George had 7 children who had descendents. For those who think they might be related, I am (2005) including a descendent file for each of them.

Jan-March 2005 - got an interesting call and mail from Bill Hinson, whose with the a Sons of Confederate Veterans' group in Pearl, MS. He was inquiring about descendents of Julia Cordelia Weissinger, daut/of Alexander Jackson Weissinger, who has left us with much family genealogy records. Bill had Julia's 1863 journal, written in Carroll Co. (Winona?) MS during the Civil War. Bill wanted to contact any living MS area descendents about disposition of this Journal. Julia was about 14 at the time. When time permits, I'll put up a few excerpts. Interesting reading for teen-age Weissingers! Our thanks to Bill who is no relation, but contacted us.

June, 2002 - got a windfall of some photos from Cave Hill Cem., Louisville, KY and had-to-change some information regarding Geo. Wash. Weissinger's line. If that is your line, be sure to check!
and added some more descendents to the listing of children of George & Winifred Weissinger.
and have done some researching on sons and grandsons of George and Winifred and the units they served in during the Civil War. More-to-come.

November, 2001 - recently was contacted by a new searcher - this one has as her ancestor John (Johannes, Johan) Weissinger, who was son of Jacob , another brother, who died in Germany, 1823. For those who have a Weissinger in SC, this information may be of help. John Weissinger letters, 1828, 1836

August 2000 - one of our newer searchers (Kent Weissinger below) is to thank for sending me to WorldConnect where I found Leonhardt & Agnes Dorothea with their family.
Inasmuch as I'm still trying to ascertain WHERE this info comes from, I've not added it to my database here. The information you see comes from other family sources, which includes Bible Pages for George's now-known brother John.
check it out and let me know what You think - I think there is a most-probable match!?

June, 1999 - have added a short (7 pages) account of George and Winifred Weissinger in SC, GA and AL, 1780's to 1820's. Much of it is based on family accounts, searches, research and so on. I have also tied in some links for their children. Sources are listed at the end.

  8. Emily, b about 1820, d "before debut", Perry Co. AL (no issue)

George Weissinger, apparently met his wife after he moved to GA from SC; he settled in Augusta GA area; was a shopkeeper and married there.

About 1820 or so, he moved, with some of his family, to Perry County AL and was an 8-term Perry Co. representative to AL Legislature; he is also credited with naming Hamburg, AL, a very small town near his land.

George and Winifred Weissinger's eldest son, Leonard Anderson Weissinger, went to Perry County AL as did his father, and, again, following his father's footsteps, entered the Legislature as a representative from Perry Co. "L.A.", as he was more popularly styled, also was a Mayor of Marion AL. Leonard Anderson Weissinger had no descendents from the five children of his first marriage. He had only 1 surviving son by his second, Henry Yarborough Weissinger, but he had a step-son, (by Eliza Mary Bond, his second wife born of her first marriage), George Doherty Johnson (obits 1910, 1911) who followed in His Step-father's footsteps as Mayor of Marion and a representative to AL Legislature. Inasmuch as only 10 years separated George Doherty Johnston and Henry Yarbrough Weissinger, these half-brothers were apparently close, as were their immediate descendents.

Henry Yarbrough Weissinger, son of L.A. Weissinger and Eliza Mary Bond, married Emily Elizabeth Miller 1870, Mt. Pleasant, Maury Co. TN. "H.Y." (as He is more usually known) had issue:
  1. Henry Yarbrough, Jr. b 1870 TN, m1) Lena Hunter Hart, about 1895 Paducah KY, Divorced; m2) Gertrude Louise Hinga 1910, St. Joseph MI, d 1958 Cleveland OH
recived mail May, 2002 from Nell Coulter who is a descendent thru 1st wife - the last name changed Weissinger to Martin for 2 sons of this marriage.
  2. Mary Leslie (1872 TN-1903 East Lake, AL)
  3. Charles Miller b 1873 TN, m Ira Corin Harrison 1907, Birmingham AL, d 1967 Opelika AL-- a descendent Charles Hill Weissinger is responsible for finding Geo. I's tombstone in Perry Co. a few years ago. - I recently (12-98) lost touch. - anyone can fill-me-in, please advise -fpm

  5. Leonard Anderson Weissinger (one of many of this name!) b 1877, Spring Hill TN, m Susie Will Weissinger (no known relationship) 1915 Dallas Co AL, d 1956-- been corresponding with "cousin Horace" for some time; he has written a phamplet on Weissinger genealogy. (H.W,Weissinger, 4529 Linpark Dr., Birmingham 35222)
  6. Winifred Mildred b 1880 Spring Hill TN, m1)Edward Carnot Janney 1901, m2) Walter Eddins Smith 1919, d 1966 Birmingham AL -- Horace Weissinger, 4529 Linpart Dr., Birmingham 35222 and I haave been corresponding for a number of years. He also has compiled a Weissinger genealogy in booklet form. - fpm
  7. Annie Minor b 1881, Spring Hill TN, m1) Millard Henderson Palmer 1904), m2) Lawrence Loder 1943 WY; d 1960 Green Bay WI -- this is my line fpm
  8. Burke Bond b 1887 Maury Co TN; d 1963 Tucson AZ no issue (d.s.p.)

Henry Yarbrough Weissinger "H.Y." served in the Civil War(28th AL ; afterwards he became a teacher, beginning in Perry Co AL and then in various places in AL and TN. He lived until (obit) 1936; in his latter years he became much interested in genealogy and it is to him that we are indebited for the original painstaking work on the early Weissinger genealogy.

Besides H.Y.Weissinger, we have other written-by-descendent sources: Mary Bond Palmer McCrary; Henry Poellnitz Johnston; Horace Wilkinson Weissinger; and me, Frances Palmer Morrison.
and there are some Eliza Mary Bond (Johnston, Weissinger)original archived records at UNC at Chapel Hill's Southern Collection.

If you DO find someone who matches, or have any information not shown, please let me know; write me, Frances Morrison with any additional information.
