pregnancysuits.jpg
Pregnancy Suits on Scoliosis Frames, Copper and Steel

I am a mother and a metal sculptor, in that order. The exploration of the pregnant forms in clay and non ferrous metals has preoccupied my art. The themes of fertility and birth in my work developed into floral interpretations in hammer formed copper and brass sheet metal.

I have worked as an Artist in Residence at Day Care Centers and Elementary Schools where exploration of materials and art based learning are encouraged. Children, when presented with an unfamiliar material (such as wire,) will create the most amazing sculptures.

It is my job as an educator to facilitate the experimentation and expression of children through art. I submit materials to children, teach them about safety, discuss some basic techniques and tools, then give them time to explore how metal pieces can fit together, how balance can affect a sculpture, how weight can affect the stability of a structure. It's always a science, math, art experiment. I try not to plan much more than what materials to bring. The children's interests dictate the outcome of a residency. I'm optimistic that the future educational systems will encourage art based learning as an option for children that have not succeeded in the traditional school environment.

I've spent some of the past 24 years hammering, welding, brazing, soldering, firing, glazing, drawing, doodling, documenting, photographing, birthing, nursing, gardening, mothering, teaching and absorbing life.

Life has taken me from Cleveland to Pittsburgh, London, Aix-en-Provence, San Francisco and now to Oberlin, Ohio. We have a shop, I have some metal, I'm happy.

The sculptural elements on this site are all hand formed in copper and brass unless noted in the caption.
