I have traveled to and returned from our great trek to Meeker and the National Finals....as always and enjoyable trip
(no secret here: I love Colorado!). I decided to break up the trip with a stop at Soldier Hollow Sheepdog Classic to see some
of the qualifying action and cheer some of my friends. It was my good fortune to happen upon an awesome chiropractic vet who
did miraculous work on my aching old guy, Rye, as well as a number of other dogs needing adjustment.
Here's my summary of the events:
MEEKER CLASSSIC SHEEPDOG SDT:
I arrived in plenty of time at Meeker to climb to the top of the hill and get settled before the rain showers arrived
to create a muddly slippery mess.
Ross: My young Open dog ran very well...and awesome outrun and lift, some struggles staying on line
down the fetch and Rossy worked hard to put together a good quality drive. He had a very nice shed and then timed out at the
pen. Ross had a good score of 62 but was a couple of points short of the 64 points needed to qualify for the Semi-Final Round.
I was quite happy with his tenacity and scope on a difficult field competing against top competition.
Rye: Rye was feeling very good and was moving with athleticism of dog many years younger. I confidently
sent Left as I have sent Rye Left for many years on this field. I was a bit surprised to see his head turn inward just before
he dropped out of sight....not too alarmed I gave a quick re-direct as he disappeared from sight. I WAS alarmed to see him
re-appear in the middle of the field headed determindly to a cross-over (he'd never done such a rediculous thing in his life).
I managed to stop him to correct him and send him LEFT again....nope! he was quite certain that he wanted to continue to the
RIGHT. There was no dissuading him. After that horrendous beginning, Rye proceeded to lay down a brilliant athletic run....other
than some fussing about panels, Rye's fetch was as straight as they come, a good drive with nice turns and a spectacular finish
with zero off shed and pen (there were few pens). Unfortunately, none of it good enough to compensate for a 19 pts deduction
off a horrendous outrun. I am philosophical about the 'crossover'...Rye is nearing retirement and he is crossing off never
before experienced "delights" from his "Bucket List".....Crossover: check!.
In between delightful visits with good friends and the hosipitality of the Meeker event, I worked in some practice
sessions....a bit of work for my Open dogs....but mostly focused on my inexperienced Nursery dog, Craig.
