Features of Our IB Middle Years Program

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program is a comprehensive academic program offered in Grades 6 through 10 at The Dwight School. The range and depth of the curriculum affords every child the opportunity to exhibit the 'spark of genius'

The powerful components of the MYP include:

1. Concurrent learning across eight subject areas:

English
Second Language
Humanities

Mathematics
The Arts

2. Consistent, High Academic Standards:
Teachers use criterion-referenced assessment which is benchmarked against
clear objectives used in all MYP schools worldwide

3. Holistic learning - The Areas of Interaction:
Learning is organized around five major themes (Areas of Interaction) to enable students to see that real-world issues require insights gained from a variety of disciplines. These themes comprise:

Health & social education
homo faber - the great achievements of humankind
Global environmental issues
Approaches to learning - study skills and interpersonal skills
Community & service

4. An International education:
Students acquire insights into global concerns and develop a sense of collective responsibility and citizenship.

5. Writing Standards:
A high standard of written communication is the hallmark of all IB programs.Writing skiils
are emphasized throughout and form an important part of assessment in all MYP subjects

5. Culture:
Students develop a sense of personal and cultural identiy and respect for themselves and others

6. An Action Curriculum:
Personal initiative through action is an intrinsic aspect of the MYP at The Dwight School.
This is exemplified by:

A Personal Project - the major culmination of the 10th grade
Leadership curriculum - embedded into grades 6-8

Service to the local and international community
Civics: The Institute For Civic Leadership -taking action now

The Personal Project
The Tenth Grade culminates in this opportunity for students to exhibit flair and passion for a subject of their choice

Assessment &
Standardized Testing
Multiple forms of assessment are used in all grades thereby accessing all aspects of a child's potential

Annual testing takes place in all MYP grades as a compliment to the academic program and includes:

The ERB CTPV Test of Basic Skills
The ERB Writing Test
10th Grade Comprehensive Test in English and Mathematics
The PSAT
Preparation for the SAT I and II
